WikiTok is a project with an interface in the style of the social network TikTok, but instead of short videos, the feed contains random articles from Wikipedia. The service was developed in TypeScript and uploaded to Github by developer Isaac Jemal. WikiTok works in 14 languages, including English, Spanish, Chinese and Russian.
Among the features of the WikiTok project are noted:
- vertical scrolling of random Wikipedia articles;
- support for 14 languages, including English, Spanish, French, German, Chinese, Japanese and others;
- article previews with images, titles, and excerpts;
- ability to share articles directly or by copying a link;
- language selection with country flags;
- Preload images and content for smooth scrolling;
- responsive design that works on mobile and desktop.
Of the technical tools specified: React 18, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS, Vite.
The developer commented on the Hacker News site, “I created this after seeing someone ask for it on Twitter. It was half past 1am, but I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to do it. The code is very simple, there’s no backend at all, I guess, because the Wikipedia API is very easy to use and you can make requests in the frontend. So you query random articles, get a few snippets and an attached image!”
