The numbers show a tough truth: violence affects many families in Cyprus, even if we don’t want to see it. SPAVO’s campaign gives us all a chance to help fight violence against women and support families in need.

To mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (November 25) and Human Rights Day (December 10), the Association for the Prevention and Handling of Violence in the Family (SPAVO) is launching the campaign: ‘Together We Protect Lives – Support Frontline Programs’.

This campaign aims to raise awareness about domestic violence and violence against women, strengthen frontline programs, and provide support to victims. This includes psychological and legal help, safe shelters, and encouraging everyone to break the silence and show real support. Violence against women and families isn’t just a number — it’s a painful reality for many in Cyprus. In 2024, 3,322 incidents of domestic violence were reported, with over 1,300 cases leading to criminal investigations and 703 going to court. Also, 711 arrest warrants and 672 restraining orders were issued to protect victims.

A shocking 76% of victims are women, and a European survey shows that 36% of women in Cyprus have faced physical or sexual violence after age 15. While these numbers are concerning, they only show part of the issue since many cases go unreported due to fear and silence.
