Cyprus Fireplaces: Tradition or Decoration?

A fireplace in a home is a classic part of life and culture. Even though the weather in Cyprus doesn’t always need a fireplace, especially with mild winters, it still stands as a symbol of warmth and intimacy.

Looking back at the past and exploring today’s stone houses in mountain villages—and some modern city homes—shows that the fireplace is still a sign of tradition, hospitality, warmth, and memory. But how much does this traditional feature still matter? In modern Cypriot homes, is the fireplace now a tradition or just a decorative habit?

Past vs. Traditional Fireplace

In the past, the authentic stone fireplace was the ‘heart’ of the home. Families cooked meals around it, warmed themselves, and gathered to share stories. It was all about tradition, warmth, and togetherness.

Have things changed today?

Many believe that things have changed. In cities and many villages, fireplaces are not seen as necessary for warmth since most homes have modern air conditioning.

Still, some choose them for their beauty and cozy atmosphere. The fireplace hasn’t vanished; it’s just evolved. Now it’s elegant, energy-efficient, and modern.

For many Cypriots, lighting the fireplace in winter—especially in December and January—brings moments of relaxation, family gatherings, and festive meals.

In country houses and rural homes, the fireplace holds special meaning. It symbolizes warmth and a ‘return’ to roots, often enjoyed with traditional treats like chestnuts, zivania, and wine. How many of us look for a cottage with a fireplace in mountain villages for Christmas to roast over the fire?

Tradition or Decoration?

The answer to whether today’s fireplace is a tradition or just decoration lies somewhere in between. For younger generations, it connects family and friends differently. For older generations, it holds deep memories.

In our Cyprus, where winter is short but full of experiences, the fireplace remains a quiet reminder of the past within the present. Even if it’s just decorative now, it still deserves to be called ‘the heart of the home.’
