The virgin mary of moutoullas – a religious treasure in the marathasa valley

οπτικό Η Παναγία του Μουτουλλά Ένας θρησκευτικός θησαυρός στην κοιλάδα της Μαραθάσας

The Mutulla of the Nicosia District is a mountainous village located in the Marathasa Valley on the slopes of Troodos. It is a beautiful community, incredibly picturesque and traditional, known for its flowing waters, significant cultural heritage, and its architecture – both of its houses and its churches.

In Mutulla lies one of the most important religious and cultural monuments of our island: a small church dedicated to the Virgin Mary of Mutulla. It is considered the oldest dated church in Cyprus with a bifid wooden roof, which makes it stand out among other churches for various reasons.

The church of the Virgin Mary of Mutulla, according to the founding inscription located on the northern wall of the Sanctuary, was built and frescoed in 1280 A.D., at the expense of John of Mutulla and his wife Irene, who are depicted holding a model of the church.” It is believed that it may have been a private chapel.

This religious treasure in the Marathasa Valley has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1985. According to a feature by the Mutulla Community Council, this particular church was included in the UNESCO list based on three criteria. Firstly, because it represents an important architectural monument that is very well preserved. Secondly, because it is an exceptional testimony to Byzantine culture on the island, and thirdly, due to the church’s frescoes, which include elements that demonstrate the relationship between Eastern and Western art. Based on this last point, the frescoes inside the church narrate scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary and Christian teachings, serving as unique examples of religious Cypriot painting.

The church is built on a hill in the area and offers visitors a breathtaking view of the surrounding villages, mountains, and lush landscape. Thanks to both the historical significance of the Virgin Mary of Mutulla and the natural beauty visible to visitors, the church serves as a magnet for many believers seeking tranquility and peace.
