Cyprus’s Environmental Authority issued a negative opinion on the coastal protection plan for Pantachou–Glyki Nero in Ayia Napa, effectively freezing the project in its current form.

The proposal included a 470-meter submerged breakwater and artificial beach nourishment along 710 meters, with an estimated total cost of about €3.3 million.

Authorities said the works could cause significant and potentially irreversible damage to protected marine habitats, including the nearby Natura 2000 area at Cape Greco.

A major concern was the possible impact on the Mediterranean monk seal, as the project area lies relatively close to sea caves used by the species for resting and breeding.

Officials also cited practical constraints, including the large volume of required construction materials and their limited availability. The Public Works Department was urged to return with a softer, nature-based coastal solution.
