The British Bases are fully on board with the Republic of Cyprus’s efforts to fight the foot-and-mouth disease outbreak in Larnaca District. The Administration of the British Bases has confirmed their support for the measures taken by the Republic of Cyprus to handle this outbreak.

Representatives from the Bases are actively joining meetings of the coordination committee at the Joint Rescue Coordination Center (JRCC) in Larnaca. This keeps them informed about the situation and aligned with response efforts.

After discussions with farmers, local authorities, and other relevant services, more preventive steps have been introduced. These include increased patrols and checks, along with new disinfection points, all in close cooperation with the Veterinary Services of the Republic of Cyprus.

Right now, there are no confirmed cases in the British Bases areas. However, Dekelia’s Political Administrator Maria Kyriakidou mentioned that these measures are preventive. They aim to protect animal health and the wider community.

She said: “The Administration of the British Bases is fully committed to supporting the Republic of Cyprus in containing foot-and-mouth disease. Our teams work closely with Veterinary Services and other authorities. We stay engaged through daily coordination meetings at JRCC to make sure necessary preventive actions are taken. Protecting animal health and supporting local farmers is a shared duty, and we remain alert, contributing to the national effort to stop further spread of the disease.”

The responsible authorities of the British Bases also confirmed that any suspicious activities are reported to veterinary authorities. They continue to communicate with local communities, farmers, and other stakeholders to raise awareness about biosecurity measures needed to protect animal health and prevent disease spread.

Last week, as part of broader efforts to control the disease, the Veterinary Services of the Republic of Cyprus vaccinated the local cattle breed ‘Cypriot Valtas’ in Livadi Akrotiri area within the Western Areas of the British Bases.
