There’s trouble in Latsia. Kittens living outside supermarkets and in yards are going missing for unknown reasons. This isn’t just a Nicosia issue; similar cases are being looked into across Cyprus, raising alarms among volunteers and animal welfare groups.
A complaint says a woman is trapping kittens from a popular supermarket in the Latsia area and putting them in her car. This seems to be part of a bigger problem, with reports of other kittens disappearing from supermarkets and homes. A volunteer on ‘Alpha News’ shared that – based on her info – the cats from this supermarket were taken by a German woman who allegedly sends them to Germany for money. The fee is said to be around 400 euros.
The volunteer also noted that this isn’t the first time such things have happened. She mentioned that the culprits seem to target mainly neutered and well-cared-for cats, which frustrates volunteers who have invested time and money in their care for years.
The case has been reported to the Ecologists’ Movement, which is demanding a full investigation. It’s important to remember that it’s illegal to abandon or release an animal under human care with the intent to get rid of it.
The Movement is urging the Police to find the person involved, clarify the situation, and look into other reports of missing animals. Meanwhile, volunteers are asking anyone with information to contact the Authorities right away. Reports say the suspect’s details were given to the Animal Police on Saturday, and some steps have been taken, including communication with the person involved. However, the kittens are still missing, raising more concerns about their well-being.
The volunteers are committed to their mission until they get answers. When animals that have been cared for over years vanish in days, there can’t be any unanswered questions.
