The Minister of Education, Sports, and Youth, Athena Michaelidou, called December 22, 2025, a “historic day” for Cyprus’s education system. This came after the House of Representatives approved the Public Educational Service law and rules for evaluating teachers and educational work in Primary and Secondary Education.
However, even with the Ministry’s positive view, teacher organizations’ reactions will be important in the coming time. The evaluation issue impacts thousands of teachers’ work methods, professional growth, and daily lives. Ms. Michaelidou pointed out that change was needed in the existing system for decades. She stressed that the new framework is based on solid educational principles and aims to help teachers grow and improve public school education.
She also noted that this result came after months of talks, discussions, and serious disagreements. She highlighted that real work starts today to put the new system into action. Soon, it will be clear how the new rules will be applied and how the educational community will react. Teacher organizations are already raising concerns about some parts of the new framework.
The Minister promised that the Ministry of Education will back teachers and their organizations. She emphasized that the goal is to support public schools and enhance students’ and teachers’ daily experiences. With careful planning, specific steps, and clear goals, as she mentioned, a new chapter for Cypriot education begins. The focus now shifts from Parliament to classrooms.
