Disabled individuals will hold a peaceful protest outside the Presidential Palace. They want to highlight the need for respect for their basic human rights. The Pan-Cyprian Organization of the Blind is calling for equal participation in society, securing benefits, and access to services that support independent living and dignity for disabled citizens.

The protest is set for Tuesday, March 31, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., outside the Presidential Palace. This mobilization responds to new legislation called ‘The Social Participation, Inclusion, and Independent Living of Disabled Persons Law of 2026.’ Many see this law as inadequate and not meeting international and European standards. The organizers argue that the process of preparing this bill lacked transparency and ignored suggestions from disabled individuals.

One of the main demands is to ensure existing benefits remain intact without cuts or changes that could threaten the income of disabled citizens. They also want proper implementation of ‘personal assistance’ and ‘home care’ without financial burdens on them or their families. The organizers are asking for transparency in how applications are evaluated and for fair appeal procedures. They stress the importance of following international conventions and guidelines on the rights of disabled people.

They point out that the new legislation violates the right of disabled citizens to participate equally in all areas of social life. It restricts access to services and creates major barriers to independent living. The event aims to show the determination of disabled citizens to advocate for fair and human-centered laws that respect their dignity and ensure equal opportunities in society.
