E-cigarettes Pose Health Risks for Teens: 5 Key Facts

It is widely known that the e-cigarette emerged primarily as an alternative solution to traditional smoking, with the ‘promise’ to reduce the risks associated with tobacco combustion and offer a ‘cleaner’ nicotine experience.

For many individuals, the e-cigarette became a way to reduce or even quit smoking, while for others, it became a new daily habit with its own concerns and challenges.

Speaking about e-cigarettes and teenagers, one might argue that in recent years, with the advent of this ‘different’ cigarette, many teenagers have been drawn to it, perhaps mainly due to its ‘pleasant’ flavors or the image projected on social media. If not all teenagers, most consider it harmless, but in reality, it contains substances that can harm health.

So, what are the most concerning truths every parent and teenager needs to know about e-cigarettes?

E-cigarettes seriously harm lung health

According to PediaLung.com and Pediatric Pulmonologist Dr. Ioannis Makarios, e-cigarettes damage the lungs. E-cigarettes are not at all innocent. They contain dangerous chemicals like formaldehyde and acrolein that irritate the lungs, cause inflammation, and make breathing difficult. The American Thoracic Society (ATS) warns that teenagers who vape face an increased risk of chronic bronchitis, while their asthma may become more severe and harder to control.

Nicotine causes serious addiction

Many e-cigarette liquids contain nicotine, a highly addictive substance that can negatively affect brain development. The British Thoracic Society (BTS) sounds the alarm, emphasizing that nicotine addiction during adolescence can trap young people into smoking for their entire lives.

When flavor becomes a threat

Fruity and sweet flavors may seem innocent and ‘harmless,’ but they hide a dark side: they contain diacetyl, a chemical linked to so-called ‘popcorn lung’ — a serious and irreversible lung condition.

E-cigarettes and lung disease EVALI

The use of e-cigarettes has been linked to EVALI, a serious condition that can cause significant lung damage and threaten life.

How passive smoking harms health

Even if our child does not use e-cigarettes, exposure to secondhand smoke can irritate the lungs and worsen asthma symptoms.

What can parents do?

Preventing e-cigarette use by teenagers starts at home. Parents play a crucial role, not only in enlightening but also in shaping a healthy environment where communication, trust, and support are priorities.

By openly discussing the risks with our children, setting examples and clear boundaries, we as parents can significantly reduce the likelihood of experimentation/addiction with e-cigarettes.
