An era comes to a close with the departure of Johannes Hahn from the position of the European Commission’s special envoy on the Cyprus problem. The former EU Commissioner submitted his resignation, notifying both the Commission and the United Nations of his decision.

According to Commission spokesperson Maciej Berestecki, President Ursula von der Leyen will decide on the next steps in due course. Hahn recently assumed the role of president of the general council of the Austrian National Bank, with a five-year mandate that began in January 2026.

Behind the decision lies more than just the new role. Reports indicate that Hahn felt deep frustration from his contacts in Nicosia, having formed the impression that there is no genuine will to make progress on the Cyprus issue.

This frustration is not isolated. Earlier, special envoy Maria Angela Holguín made clear that as long as the parties cannot agree even on confidence-building measures, she sees no prospect for a new conference.

The government spokesperson stated that the Commission is already taking steps to appoint a new special envoy, while President Christodoulides was personally informed by Hahn via letter.

The UN Secretary-General, despite the difficulties, assures that he will not abandon his efforts until the end of his mandate.
