On our island, there are moments when time feels like it stops. Memories blend with faith, calm minds, and peaceful souls. This time, we visited the Marathasa Valley, just outside the lovely mountainous village of Kalopanagiotis in the Nicosia District.
There, under a single wooden roof filled with history, stands a unique group of three churches – Saint John Lampadistis, Saint Heracleidius, and a small Latin chapel. This UNESCO World Heritage site not only shares the past but also brings it to life.
This complex was once a monastery. Its exact founding date is lost to time, along with many renovations that shaped it into what we see today. Yet every stone and fresco tells the story of the area’s rich spiritual and artistic life.
The Church of Saint John Lampadistis
The Church of Saint John Lampadistis, built in 1731, holds the tomb of the Saint from the 12th century, found under the narrow northeastern arch. The Saint’s skull rests in a special niche, while his icon from 1543 draws you in with its simple yet powerful expression. Nearby, the Byzantine Museum adds to the experience with valuable pieces of Cyprus’s ecclesiastical art.
The Church of Saint Heracleidius
A few steps away, the Church of Saint Heracleidius from the 11th century shares its own stories through frescoes from the 13th and 16th centuries. The stunning carved wooden iconostasis, featuring giant figures, immediately catches your eye: the Lusignan lion and the Byzantine eagle stand as silent witnesses to times of conflict and harmony.
Latin Chapel
The Latin chapel may be small, but it holds priceless Italo-Byzantine frescoes that are among the best in Cyprus.
The group of three churches is more than just a historical-religious site. It is a living testament to Cyprus’s cultural identity and a place where faith, art, and history come together under one roof.

Moreover, Kalopanagiotis offers a perfect escape where nature, water, and traditional architecture tell their own stories. The cobblestone streets, flowing waters, and greenery of Marathasa create a peaceful setting that lets every visitor experience this place fully!
