Five-year-old Abraham, the child of Cypriots in the diaspora who have lived in Manchester for the past decade, is fighting a severe battle for his life after being diagnosed with acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM), a rare and serious inflammatory condition affecting the brain and spinal cord.
Andrea Papachristoforou and her husband, both nurses by profession, are asking the government for what should be a given: to support their child in receiving the necessary treatment without considering whether he holds British citizenship. They are calling on the President of the Republic to respond to their plea for Abraham to be transferred either to Israel or to America.
Abraham will turn 5 years old in just a few days, on December 24, 2025. According to his mother, he fell seriously ill on October 9 and was diagnosed with a rare and particularly severe disease known as ADEM (Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis). This condition causes inflammation in the brain and spinal cord, severely impacting the nervous system.
Since then, he has been hospitalized at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool. Doctors have informed the family that the child’s condition is critical and expressed concerns that he may not recover with the current treatment.
“The doctors administered a treatment that did not help and suggested we proceed with chemotherapy,” his mother explains to philenews. However, there are specialized hospitals in Israel and the United States that have recorded successful cases of treating this disease.
Specifically, these include the Israeli Sheba Medical Center and Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center as well as the American Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP).
“We are asking for support from the Ministry of Health to help us transfer our baby. We request a response from the President of the Republic to facilitate the treatment he needs. We are both Cypriots and want them to help our baby. We spoke with the Ministry of Health but were told that the baby has British citizenship and they said he is not entitled to anything. We have contacted the Presidential Office and are waiting to see how and if they will assist us,” Mrs. Papachristoforou states.
Meanwhile, Abraham’s family is racing against time to raise the necessary funds to transfer their child to one of these centers, offering him the best possible chance for recovery.
A wave of love and support has emerged through social media, with friends and acquaintances participating in efforts to raise funds for little Abraham’s treatment. The family is making an appeal for prayers, love, and any financial assistance, so they can give their child a chance at life.
