On Wednesday, the Cabinet of Ministers adopted a series of decisions regarding Contract Soldiers (SYOP) of the National Guard, aimed at their financial and professional advancement.
According to Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas, it was decided to extend the service period of SYOP to age 57, up from the previous limit of 42. At the same time, the maximum recruitment age has been raised from 27 to 35.
In 2026, a total of 250 contract soldiers will be able to compete for vacant positions through written examinations and secure permanent status in the military, provided they have reached 42 years of age. Additionally, a merit-based promotion procedure to contract non-commissioned officer is being established, with the possibility of advancing to the A8 pay scale and the rank of sergeant major.
The Cabinet also approved increases in special allowances: from €100 to €150 and from €200 to €250, for members of special forces, commandos, demining units, and National Guard medics.
Minister Palmas noted that the SYOP institution was introduced in 2016 following the reduction of mandatory military service, and since then a significant exodus of personnel has been observed. The government has, for the first time, decided to implement substantial reforms while upholding the principles of meritocracy, transparency, and equal treatment.
