Some people, when life challenges them, stand strong. They don’t forget. They don’t just move on — they move forward, carrying their experiences with them. Maria Markou is one of those people.

The diagnosis of acute myeloid leukemia hit hard and fast, shaking her world. It’s an aggressive cancer, leaving no time for waiting or choices. Only a fight. Maria faced this battle with faith, dignity, and strength. For nearly six months, she was in Germany, away from home, her daily life, and her loved ones. In the hospital corridors, through treatments and chemotherapy, she lived the toughest time of her life. A time she will never forget. And Maria holds onto those memories.

In 2021, a crucial moment arrived: the bone marrow transplant. The donor wasn’t a stranger; it was her own sister. A loved one giving her a priceless gift of life. Today, five years later, Maria is alive. And she remembers everything — the fear, the anxiety, and the tough nights in Germany. But she also remembers the support from those who stood by her, the messages, the prayers, and the strength sent by people she might not even know.

Maria lives. She remembers. And she is grateful. That alone is a victory.

Above all, she cherishes her family. Her sister became her hope. Her loved ones never left her side. She also remembers the support from Omonia, during a time when every sign of love mattered so much. Now, Maria often talks about the “simple” everyday things she once took for granted: watching her children grow up, waking up in the morning, and being present.

The heartfelt message she wrote earlier for her sister Elena on her birthday.

The person who gave me my life back, the person who gave my children their mother back, the person who gave my parents their child back, the person who gave me the chance to see my children grow up and cherish every moment with them.

This person is my donor, my sister Elena Marcou-Ghobrial, the reason I am still here!!

“Today is World Cancer Day, a disease that changed my life too. The diagnosis: acute myeloid leukemia. A tough battle that forces you to fight with all your strength — physically and mentally. The fight goes on daily even after cancer leaves our lives as we heal physically and mentally. I send courage and strength to families of fighters who have passed away. Strength to those who fought and are still fighting. Please donate blood, platelets, or become bone marrow donors. This is the best way to help against this disease! I am grateful to everyone who supported me in my tough battle. Thank you.”
