The international culinary world and Cypriot society are mourning the sudden loss of famous chef Andreas Mavrommatis. He passed away at 69, leaving a big gap behind.
In a social media post, Annita Demetriou, the President of the House of Representatives and DISY, shared her sadness over the loss of this talented Cypriot chef. She praised his role in promoting Cypriot cuisine around the world.
“The man who brought Cypriot flavors to the hearts of the French has left us. He leaves a rich legacy of tastes and culture. Chef Andreas Mavrommatis believed our traditions, aromas, and memories deserved a spot at the best dining tables. He started from a small deli in Paris and created the Michelin-starred “Maison Mavrommatis,” sharing the tastes of Cyprus and Greece with the world. Safe travels, chef. Cyprus will always be proud of you”.
The “Maison Mavrommatis” received a Michelin star, honoring its high quality and global promotion of Cypriot cuisine.
Andreas Mavrommatis was born in Agios Ioannis Pitsilia, Limassol, and studied in Paris. He skillfully blended creativity with business, showcasing Cyprus and Greece’s products and flavors worldwide. His career marks an important chapter in Mediterranean gastronomy and Cypriot representation abroad.
He was a trailblazer in Mediterranean cuisine and one of the key ambassadors for Cypriot and Greek food internationally. He highlighted our homeland’s flavors and products, earning respect from both French and global culinary circles. Beyond his impressive career, Andreas Mavrommatis and his family built a lasting friendship between Cyprus and France. Their presence in Paris greatly strengthened Franco-Cypriot ties.
His passing creates a big void not just in gastronomy but also among expatriate Cypriot Greeks. His memory and work will inspire future generations.
