Justice Minister Kostas Fytiris has chosen to give up his lifetime ministerial pension and bonus.

In his statement, he says, “To serve the country, I left the private sector (where I earned much more) and took on a tough job.”

His full statement

To clear up any wrong comments about my pension, I want to say that I have officially and in writing told the Ministry of Finance and Parliament that I am completely giving up my lifetime ministerial pension and the bonus. This choice is based on principles of responsibility and ethics. I give up all perks from being a minister and keep only the rights from my forty years in the National Guard.

It’s important to note that what I’m giving up is about five times more than the total savings the state would get from a temporary, two-year pause of my current pension.

I left the private sector (where I earned much more) to serve the country and took on a tough job. But with full dedication, determination, and willpower, away from selfish interests, I will do everything to meet society’s demands for a safe environment across Cyprus.
