Nicosia water supply at breaking point — urgent appeal in Parliament

The Nicosia district is heading toward an emergency over drinking water. The president of the District Self-Government Organisation (EOA), Konstantinos Giorkatzis, addressed the parliamentary Agriculture Committee with a dramatic statement, sounding the alarm.

According to him, the existing water supply system is operating at its limits. The Water Development Department infrastructure can deliver up to 12,000 cubic metres per day — a volume that consumption already reaches during summer months. “Any failure or unexpected incident could blow the system apart,” Giorkatzis stressed.

The situation is described as critical particularly in the broader Lakatamia area, including Anthoupolis, Deftera, Anayia and Ergates. Rapid residential development is worsening the problem — in just two years, connections to the Glyfou reservoirs increased by 1,004, at an annual growth rate of 5-7%.

The picture is even bleaker for Western Nicosia. Communities like Kokkinotrimithia, Palaiometocho, Mammari and Menoiko are served by makeshift solutions. Areas such as Deneia, Akaki, Peristerona and Astromeritis remain entirely cut off from government water works, relying solely on boreholes that are gradually drying up.

EOA has already invested in a new 10,000 cubic metre reservoir to strengthen autonomy, but transporting water to the reservoirs remains the state responsibility. The goal is full integration of all communities into EOA by 2029.
