As carnival events approach, the Office of the Commissioner for Environment and Animal Welfare asks everyone to use carnival products wisely. They point out that foams, streamers, and confetti can be risky for both public safety and the environment.
Commissioner Antonia Theodosiou reminds us that all these products come with instructions and warnings, as required by law. It’s important to read and follow these carefully, especially for adults buying or giving them to kids.
Health and Safety Risks
Using carnival products incorrectly can lead to health and safety problems, especially in crowded places. Some of these items have chemicals that can irritate eyes, skin, or breathing, especially in children or those with asthma or allergies.
Using them in closed spaces or busy areas, as well as spraying them directly on faces, raises the chances of discomfort or injury.
Environmental Impact
There are also big worries about their impact on the environment. Lightweight plastic items like confetti, streamers, and balloons can easily blow into nature. Over time, they break down into microplastics, which harm the environment and can affect human health.
Responsible Waste Disposal
The Commissioner’s Office stresses the need for proper waste management for carnival products, their packaging, and leftover food and drinks. Throwing away foams, plastics, and packaging carelessly in public areas causes pollution. It makes sidewalks slippery, increases accident risks, and complicates event management.
At the same time, local authorities are urged to set up special waste bins during carnival events and manage them properly. Everyone is encouraged to use these bins and not throw empty containers or items on the streets.
