The horror in Athens, where two children were abused by their uncle, has sparked anger over crimes against kids.
This case involves two children, aged 2 and 4, who were allegedly sexually abused by their 20-year-old uncle from Romania and his 40-year-old partner from Albania. The children’s mother reported the abuse to the Attica Security’s Juvenile Protection Division after discovering her brother was taking advantage of her trust and forcing the kids into inappropriate acts in front of the 40-year-old.
Police found evidence on the 20-year-old’s phone showing the abuse, along with many other child pornography files featuring young boys around 5 years old. A shocking message from the 40-year-old to the 20-year-old read, “Bring the children back home, it was nice.” The 20-year-old is now in custody, while the 40-year-old is expected to testify. Both face charges of seduction and indecency against minors, as well as child pornography.
This new crime has caused outrage on social media, with many asking why stricter measures, including castration in extreme cases, aren’t available.
As Greek society reacts strongly, public discussion in Cyprus is also heating up. MP Michalis Giakoumis has submitted a bill for chemical castration for those convicted of sexually abusing minors, along with tougher – even life – prison sentences.

The proposal suggests adding chemical castration as an option for those guilty of pedophilic crimes, alongside heavy penalties. However, government and legal experts express serious concerns about bioethics and human rights, as well as doubts about the long-term effectiveness of this measure.
