There is no doubt that in Cyprus, history is not confined to the pages of school and tourist books but stands alive through many monuments that withstand time. One of the most characteristic examples is the Church of St. Nicholas of the Roof. The church is located in a central area of the Troodos mountain range in the northern part of the Solea Valley. It can be found about two kilometers southwest of the picturesque and beautiful Kakopetria, built on the western bank of the river Klarios, also known as Karkotis.
A Unique Surviving Example of a Byzantine Monastery’s Catholic in Cyprus
According to historical sources, this church is the only remnant of an old Catholic Byzantine monastery, and as seen from the church, the monastery was founded in the 11th century. In fact, the oldest written testimonies about the monastery date back to the late 13th – early 14th century.
The monastery experienced significant prosperity during both the Middle Byzantine period and the Frankish rule. However, from the 18th century onwards, it began to decline, resulting in its dissolution by the end of the 19th century. Since then, the site has been used as a chapel and pilgrimage site, as it is today. It is worth noting that apart from the church, no other buildings of the monastic complex have survived.
A Byzantine Gem of UNESCO with 11th-Century Frescoes
At the same time, one could say that St. Nicholas Church is a Byzantine gem that testifies to our island’s deep religious tradition, with its frescoes decorating it, whispering centuries of history. The frescoes, dating from the 11th century onwards, depict faces of Saints and scenes from Christ’s life, showcasing a unique continuity of artistic expression in space.
It is important to mention that since 1985, St. Nicholas Church of the Roof has been included, along with nine other frescoed Byzantine churches in Troodos, in the list of UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Monuments.
The Church of St. Nicholas of the Roof is not only a monument of religious faith but also a living ‘guardian’ of history. Every fresco and every corner silently tells stories upon stories. In this place, tranquility accompanies every visitor on a journey through time among cultural heritage treasures that deserve to be kept alive!
