The recent storm in Cyprus has really helped boost water supplies. Meteorologist Eric Kitas shared that over 100 millimeters of rain fell in Troodos, which is great news for the mountains and southwestern areas.
He mentioned that in just three days, around 10 million cubic meters of water filled the dams. We still need another 5 million cubic meters to avoid water cuts. He thinks the upcoming rains might add a similar amount by next Monday, but it won’t fully cover irrigation needs.
Data from the Meteorological Service shows an average rainfall of 23.4 millimeters over the last three days and 49.7 millimeters since the start of the month. So far this hydrological year, we’ve seen 89% of normal rainfall levels. The highest amounts were recorded in Platania, Prodromos, and Saittas.
The Water Development Department reports that 9.2 million cubic meters flowed into the dams in the last three days, making a total of 28.4 million since October. Right now, the overall capacity is at 17.2%, which is lower than last year’s 25.9%.
Meanwhile, the Kouris, Asprokremmos, Arminou, and Germasogeia rivers are seeing increased flow, and this is expected to continue for a while.
