The United Nations Security Council is voting on the renewal of the UNFICYP peacekeeping mandate in Cyprus. This comes after a delay due to a lack of agreement.
President Nicos Christodoulides mentioned that Pakistan made comments that were not helpful for the Cypriot side. This interrupted the silent process for the resolution and required more talks.
Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres suggests renewing the mission for another year. He highlights UNFICYP’s key role in reducing tensions and shares worries about military status violations in the buffer zone and changes in Varosha.
Mr. Guterres also points out a new, though careful, dynamic in the Cyprus issue. He stresses that the mission’s success relies on full cooperation from both sides.
